The Rams find their way into the winning column against Stony Brook —

KINGSTON – Last week the Rams had a slow start on the road against Georgia state, but the script was flipped today at Meade Stadium against Stony Brook with an electric start, Jordan Colbert with an interception within the first five minutes of the game, resulting in a score. But the first touchdown didn’t come easy. Kasim Hill trotted 3-yards into the endzone for a touchdown that was revoked after an offensive penalty. No worries though, the next play, Hill to Darius Savedge made the score an early 7-0.

Cobert had himself a day starting the game and ending the first half with a bang. His second interception was with just over one minute left of play, and this time, he finished it off with a touchdown, giving the Rams a statement lead of 28-7 heading into halftime.

“Coaches always teach us, finish the play because they can go back and review it and you don’t want to miss any opportunities so I just saw the ball, scooped it, scored and took advantage of the opportunity” said Colbert.

Marquis Buchannen, the Providence native and freshman phenom did it again tonight after an impressive 63 yard completion and touchdown last week. He clearly wanted to keep building those numbers, a 70 yard completion for a touchdown in the second half gave the Rams a comfortable 21-7 lead and the momentum for the next two quarters of play.

“He’s a talented kid…. We always knew. He was Gatorade Player of the Year, he’s a quality football player out of the state of Rhode Island. We want every great player from the state of Rhode Island to stay home and play,” Coach Fleming stated post-game, “Stay here, in Rhode Island and carry that anchor out at some point in time and represent this state in a phenomenal way, and Marquis has done that.”

Many things went well for the Rams home opener, but what impressed Head Coach Jim Fleming was the support he saw in the crowd tonight. There was a sold out student section with over 1,100 tickets sold, and overall an astonishing 5452 people in attendance.

“It’s huge, to put everything in perspective when we first got here in 2014 it was friends and family, when we got this thing turned around with a new field, lights, night games.. It’s student support that's critically important, that's what we play for, we are here representing the university and these kids are here..it’s very rewarding. We have  a lot of things on the rise and we just have to continue to play quality football out there and I think kids will come.”

Although it was a quiet game for the Stony Brook offense, they fought until the end with Jadyen Cook earning a touchdown with just 3 minutes left to go in the game rounding out the score at 35-14.

The Rams certainly made some noise in the CAA tonight and have some great momentum as they go on the road next week to face second CAA opponent, Maine.

“When you go into CAA play, it is very important to present ourselves in the right manner… we got a lot of work to do, when you look back on where we are coming from from last year, every W in this conference is important… We have to try to go 1-0 again this week which is no easy task” Coach Fleming finished.
